The Five Pillars of Islam

بُنِيَ الإِسْلاَمُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ: شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، وَإِقَامِ الصَّلاَةِ، وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ، وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ، وَحَجِّ الْبَيْتِ

Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, paying zakat, fasting Ramadan, and performing Hajj.

None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all of mankind.

The Importance of Prayer

الْعَهْدُ الَّذِي بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمُ الصَّلاَةُ، فَمَنْ تَرَكَهَا فَقَدْ كَفَرَ

The covenant that separates us from them is the prayer. Whoever abandons it has disbelieved.

Make things easy, do not make things difficult. Give glad tidings and do not drive people away.

The Night Prayer

The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.

Fasting Ramadan

مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.

Speak Good or Stay Silent

مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ

Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.

Dua for Your Brother

دَعْوَةُ الْمَرْءِ الْمُسْلِمِ لأَخِيهِ بِظَهْرِ الْغَيْبِ مُسْتَجَابَةٌ

The supplication of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is answered.

Paradise and the Mother

الْجَنَّةُ تَحْتَ أَقْدَامِ الأُمَّهَاتِ

Paradise is under the feet of mothers.

  • Service and respect: genuine love, respect, and service to the mother pave the way for the child to Paradise.
  • Fulfilling one's rights: one of the main religious and moral responsibilities of a child is to earn the mother's satisfaction as a reward for her selfless sacrifice.

Who Deserves Your Companionship Most?

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: مَنْ أَحَقُّ النَّاسِ بِحُسْنِ صَحَابَتِي؟ قَالَ: أُمُّكَ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ مَنْ؟ قَالَ: أُمُّكَ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ مَنْ؟ قَالَ: أُمُّكَ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ مَنْ؟ قَالَ: أَبُوكَ

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked: Who deserves my best companionship? He said: Your mother. The man asked: Then who? He said: Your mother. The man asked: Then who? He said: Your mother. The man asked again: Then who? He said: Your father.

Disrespecting Parents Is a Major Sin

أَلاَ أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِأَكْبَرِ الْكَبَائِرِ؟ الإِشْرَاكُ بِاللَّهِ، وَعُقُوقُ الْوَالِدَيْنِ

Shall I not tell you of the greatest of major sins? Associating partners with Allah and being disrespectful to one's parents.

Respect for Young and Old

لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا وَلَمْ يُوَقِّرْ كَبِيرَنَا

He is not of us who does not show mercy to our young ones and does not acknowledge the rights of our elders.

Maintaining Your Father's Friendships

إِنَّ مِنْ أَبَرِّ الْبِرِّ صِلَةَ الرَّجُلِ أَهْلَ وُدِّ أَبِيهِ بَعْدَ أَنْ يُوَلِّيَ

One of the most virtuous acts of devotion is to maintain ties with your father's friends after he has passed away.

Do Not Neglect Those in Your Care

كَفَى بِالْمَرْءِ إِثْمًا أَنْ يُضَيِّعَ مَنْ يَقُوتُ

It is enough of a sin for a man to neglect those he is responsible for.

Mercy on Earth Brings Mercy from Above

ارْحَمُوا مَنْ فِي الأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ

Show mercy to those on earth, and the One in the heavens will show mercy to you.

The Signs of a Hypocrite

آيَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ ثَلاَثٌ: إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ، وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ، وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ

The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; and when he is trusted, he betrays.

Return the Trust

أَدِّ الأَمَانَةَ إِلَى مَنِ ائْتَمَنَكَ، وَلاَ تَخُنْ مَنْ خَانَكَ

Give back the trust to the one who trusted you, and do not betray the one who betrayed you.

Guard Your Tongue

مَنْ يَضْمَنْ لِي مَا بَيْنَ لَحْيَيْهِ وَمَا بَيْنَ رِجْلَيْهِ أَضْمَنْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةَ

Whoever guarantees me what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I guarantee him Paradise.

Sahih al-Bukhari

The Honest Merchant

التَّاجِرُ الصَّدُوقُ الأَمِينُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ

The honest, trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs.

A Muslim Does Not Wrong His Brother

A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. He does not wrong him, nor does he abandon him.

Allah is pure and loves purity. He is clean and loves cleanliness. He is generous and loves generosity. He is giving and loves giving.

Modesty Is Part of Faith

Modesty (hayaa) is a branch of faith.

Islam's Distinct Characteristic

Every religion has a distinct characteristic, and the distinct characteristic of Islam is modesty.

إِذَا لَمْ تَسْتَحِ فَاصْنَعْ مَا شِئْتَ

If you feel no shame, do as you wish.

The Nearest to the Prophet on the Day of Judgement

إِنَّ أَقْرَبَكُمْ مِنِّي مَجْلِسًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَحَاسِنُكُمْ أَخْلاَقًا

The nearest of you to me in seat on the Day of Resurrection will be those who are best in character.

He who has in his heart an atom's weight of arrogance will not enter Jannah.

Whoever helps ease one in difficulty, Allah will make it easy for him in this world and in the Hereafter.

Cover the Faults of Others

وَمَنْ سَتَرَ مُسْلِمًا سَتَرَهُ اللهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ

Whoever covers the faults of a Muslim, Allah will cover his faults in this world and in the Hereafter.
